Hi

I discovered your weblog today. Great place to be here!

Really love those sentences:

"I want the people who work with me to want to work with me–not to choose me because I’m cheaper than any of my colleagues out there. I do not compete on price. Ever. I respect my colleagues and my own business too much to do so."

I did get a similar email. "Do you sell your photo’s". Just short as that. I did not even took the time to answer this mail seriously. I just wrote: "Which photo, for what kind of purpose, for what price?" I did get a reply, but at the end I think I was too expensive for him...

Thank you for sharing your information and also thanks for the Manuals!

Thanks for posting, Margaret! You're right, it *is* hard to say "no" and sometimes it feels a bit overwhelming. One thing to keep in mind is that if you shoot commercial work (as opposed to consumer-direct), you don't need hundreds and hundreds of clients to have a successful business--you need the *right* clients and those can be in much smaller numbers than if you try to service the wrong ones (who are invariably cheap). Keep it up!

Bravo!
I get so tired of people sending me emails similar to what you received. They are requesting advice (usually) for their pet photography business. They all seem to get upset when I ask them something as simple as their name! And they want help from me?? Anyway, I digress...

I'm trying to do more stock and assignment photography. I have to say "no" a lot. Sometimes I find it very discouraging, but sometimes the "right" client comes along; one who understands the need to pay a fair price for services received. Thanks for the encouragement! Love your blog, love your website and love your comments when you post to the various forums I read. Keep up the good work!
And thanks! Margaret
