Story from the Martha File: On Wednesday evening, I went to the monthly meeting of a local event organizers&#039; group. As the members of the group introduced themselves, I noted a theme. Quite a few of them were looking for volunteers for their events.

Time wasn&#039;t too long ago when I was quite willing to be the volunteer photographer. And, yes, it was a good way to build up the professional portfolio.

However, I couldn&#039;t help but notice that the referrals to paying work were few and far between. Seemed like the only referrals I was getting were to other people who were looking for more freebies.

Time for a new approach. Here it is:
